My maternal grandmother, like many women of her generation, never had the chance to learn Hangeul as a child.

At the age of 77, she enrolled in a senior citizens' school and began learning Hangeul for the first time. Although she could read the Korean letters on TV screens and shop signs, she rarely wrote them herself, saying she didn’t like her shaky handwriting.

Over time, her health declined, and she had to stop attending the school, ending her Hangeul studies as well.

Years passed, and I eventually got married. When we had a housewarming party at our newlywed home, I asked my grandmother for one special request — to write in our guestbook by hand.

This video captures the heartfelt moment when my grandmother, after much practice, wrote a message in our housewarming guestbook — her very own handwriting, full of effort, love, and meaning.
